Manchester Utd tries branded champagne

Manchester United, the strongest football brand in the country, launches a branded champagne this week.

The champagne is produced by Marne et Champagne Diffusion (MCD), whose flagship brand is Lanson. The champagne, which will cost 15.99, adds to the wine, soft drink and lager the club has launched over the past two years.

The brand will be distributed throughout selected Tesco and Savacentre supermarkets nation-wide. It is the first time a football branded champagne will be available through retail outlets.

The drink will also be available through mail order firm Lamberhurst House Vineyards, based in Kent, which already holds the worldwide distribution rights for the club’s red and white wines.

A Lamberhurst spokesman says: “It took a long time to convince the champagne board in France that this would be a good idea. The wines have sold well, so we have high hopes that the champagne will do the same for us.”

To launch the champagne, Manchester United chairman Martin Edwards was presented with a jeroboam of the drink by MCD chairman François-Xavier Mora at the club’s Old Trafford ground.
