New media agency AKQA has been hired by the Rover Group to develop its online strategy and plan the roll out of sites for its Rover Cars, MG and Land Rover brands. AKQA has held the account for BMW, Rover’s parent company, since 1995 (www.bmw.co.uk). The award-winning Mini site (www.mini.co.uk) will continue to be managed by Ammirati Puris Lintas – the advertising agency for Rover Cars, MG and Mini.

The Conservative Party has launched an online e-mailing campaign to all activists and supporters identified from its general election Website project. Tory surfers were sent a version of William Hague’s Fresh Start speech last week, outlining plans to revamp the party’s organisation.

Web advertising in the US totalled US$217m (135m) over the first half of the year, up by over 250 per cent on the same period last year, according to an estimate from the industry newsletter Electronic Advertising & Marketplace Report.

CompuServe, the world’s se cond biggest online service provider, has announced plans to segregate its adult content into an “adult community” con-taining adult forum area, games and libraries. Online customers seeking to access the area will be required to use a password and register as being over 18-years-old.
