Orange, the mobile phone operator, is expected to announce losses of 85m, according to City analysts, when it reveals its annual results tomorrow (Thursday).

Oftel, the Telecoms watchdog, has given BT 28 days to respond to a notice obliging it to allow rivals of its Call Minder scheme access to its network. BT claims the Oftel notice will force it to drop advertising for the scheme.

Tesco is linking with the RAC to provide a free vehicle breakdown and recovery service for customers and staff whose cars break down in store car parks.

Whitbread Beer Company has appointed Jo Franks as marketing manager, with responsibility for Murphy’s Irish Stout and Boston Beer. Franks moves across from Whitbread Pub Partnerships where she was also marketing manager.

The Association of Independent Tour Operators has rejected claims by Thomson, the UK’s biggest tour operator, that travel costs will rise if the Monopolies & Mergers Commission impose new rules to curb anti-competitive behaviour in the travel industry. Among proposals made by the MMC is the rebranding of major travel agency changes to clarify their links with the big tour operators.

Republic Industries, based in the US, is to pay 95m for Eurodollar, to create the biggest car hire operation in the UK. Republic, which already owns Alamo in the UK, will control 19 per cent of the daily car rental market, compared with the 13 per cent controlled by market leader Avis.

British Airways Holidays is launching a national mailing to previous bookers and brochure requesters through Claydon Heeley. The new campaign promotes the new BA image.

Sargent, the national charity for children with cancer, has appointed John Farnhill as head of corporate fundraising. Farnhill comes from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, where he worked in the fundraising department.

Cancer Research Campaign is advertising on television for the first time and has appointed Wunderman Cato Johnson to handle the campaign. The move coincides with the appointment of David Barrett, former director of marketing for Eastern Europe at Bristol Myers Squibb, as marketing director…

…Cancer Research Campaign has also created the role of director of corporate development. Victoria Fallow, corporate development manager at Cancer Relief Macmillan Fund, has been appointed.
