TBWA in 2m World Cup 98 game victory

TBWA Simons Palmer has won a three-way pitch against HHCL and BBH for the 2m Electronic Arts launch of the World Cup 98 computer game in May.

Electronic Arts, which develops, publishes and distributes entertainment software, topped the UK computer and console game charts last Christmas with the FIFA Road to World Cup 98 game. The company is hoping to do the same in May when it launches World Cup 98. This will be available in PC, Sony PlayStation and Nintendo 64 formats.

Electronic Arts vice-president European territories Tom Stone did not rule out further similar projects in the future. “We think there will be a huge upside to the World Cup particularly if a European side wins, so we are looking at this on a project-by-project basis.

The company is in the final stages of negotiations with a major tabloid and national radio station over a 2m virtual World Cup Promotion to support the launch of the game.

Electronic Arts is the sole software licensee for FIFA and the World Cup and has global sales of 625m.
