Ridley Scott returns to ads with Orange blitz

Ridley Scott, the director of Blade Runner and Alien, is returning to his advertising roots with a new spectacular for mobile phone operator Orange.

The ads, created by WCRS, will break before summer and are ex-pected to support a period of product, rather than brand, advertising and promotion.

The commercial will be Scott’s first for more than eight years. He has his own production company, RSA, but he is not thought to have directed an ad since a Barclays campaign in 1990 for Yellowhammer. Orange confirms the director has shot the new film but refuses to give any further details on the strategy.

The news comes ahead of the announcement of first-quarter connections for the mobile networks.

Analysts estimate the total for the first three months of 1998 will top 530,000, compared with 263,000 for the same period last year. Orange is expected to account for 110,000 – slightly less than anticipated, according to the Hoare Govett estimates.
