Tesco offers cut-price TVs for World Cup

Tesco is to start selling thousands of televisions at the knock-down price of 99 in time for the World Cup.

The UK’s biggest supermarket has struck deals with manufacturers Amstrad and Fidelity to supply 24,000 TVs to 300 of the chain’s 550 stores from June 4, six days before the start of the month-long tournament.

Nearly 14,000 Fidelity 14-inch TVs will go on sale for 99, and 10,000 Amstrad 28-inch TVs will be sold for between 200 and 300.

The move is part of Tesco’s commitment to expand the non-food side of its business, but the company refuses to confirm if the sale of cheap TVs would become permanent.

In July and December, Tesco put on sale a handful of Amstrad TVs in a few of its biggest stores at 119 each, which sold in the space of hours. A company spokesman says: “They were running out of the stores.”

He adds: “Generally we are expanding the non-food side of the business.”

Earlier in the year, Tesco offered shoppers a limited range of Sony PlayStations and mini systems.
