Comet to take on Dixons by direct-selling on the Internet

Electrical retailer Comet is planning to sell the products stocked in its stores directly over its existing Internet site for the first time.

At the moment, customers can find out price and specification on the Net, but have to visit a store to make their purchase.

The site shows Comet’s entire range of goods including fridges, washing machines, TVs, audio equipment and computers.

A Comet spokeswoman has confirmed the Internet sales plan but refuses to say which products will be sold through the Website. She says no date has been set for the launch of the new operation.

Comet is Britain’s biggest out-of-town electrical retailer with 250 stores. Its rival, the Dixons Group, started selling over the Internet from a Website called Dixons On-line last autumn.

Products sold include TVs, hi-fis, camcorders, fax machines, computers and camcorders. Dixons does not sell white goods on its Website, or in its stores.

A Dixons Group spokeswoman says there are no plans for PC World and Currys to sell through the Net.
