New media agency BroadVision has relaunched the Website for American Airlines ( The agency will be targeting a database of 31 million American Airline customers to encourage greater traffic and booking transactions though the site, which claimed 65,000 registered “planning customers” and 6 million page views a week ahead of relaunch.

Online gambling revenues will grow from $535m (324m) in 1998 to over $10bn (6bn) by the year 2002, according to estimates by research company Datamonitor. Concerns over the legality of online gambling in the US are likely to result in Europe closing the gap with US rivals in gambling revenues.

Minister for industry Barbara Roche (right) has announced proposals to set up an independent panel to tackle problems over breaches of copyright and publication of libellous material over the Internet. The move follows concerns ex-pressed by Internet service providers that they may un-wittingly be dragged into legal actions because of contentious material being posted on Websites and news groups by customers.

Leading browser software provider Netscape has insisted that the anti-trust case against Microsoft, filed by the US Department of Justice in May, will ultimately succeed. Its statement follows last week’s decision by the US Court of Appeals to overturn the ruling of a lower court, preventing alleged predatory promotion for Microsoft’s rival browser Internet Explorer…

…Microsoft chairman Bill Gates (left) has predicted 60 per cent of all US households will have a PC by the year 2001 and 85 per cent of homes equipped with PCs will be connected to the Internet. Improving bandwidth and declining computer prices will be the major factors driving up the Internet audience in the US, he says.

The Sporting Life Website, a joint venture between the Press Association and Mirror Group, has registered 5.68 million page views during an Audit Bureau of Circulations/electronic audit covering the month of March. The results represent an 89 per cent increase in traffic on the site ( compared with its previous audit conducted last August. The number of visitors to the site during the latest audit period was 149,059.

Thomas Middelhoff, board member of the Bertelsmann media group, has been appointed to organise a steering committee aimed at striking an international agreement over the development of e-commerce. The move follows a meeting hosted by European Union commissioner Martin Bangemann this week, which aimed to secure international consensus on how to handle the growth of online commerce.
