Mirror Group has appointed Victor Blank, former head of Charterhouse merchant bank, as its chairman. Mirror Group Newspapers has appointed Kerry O’Connor, formerly with the sales promotion company Coaxis, as business enterprise director, with responsibility for developing brand extensions such as the Mirror Travel Club.
BBC Broadcast has appointed Andria Vidler as project marketing director for sport. Sophie McLoughlin, acting head of network radio marketing has been made head of marketing and strategy for Network Radio. A marketing manager for Radio 5 Live is also to be appointed.
The $1.4bn contract for New York city’s street furniture and outdoor advertising has been cancelled by Republican mayor Rudolph Guiliani who says he wants to pick more than one contractor for ‘greater design variation’. Shortlisted consortia TDI, Wall Media, Decaux and the More Group have lobbied for years for the contract.
Thomson Holidays has shortlisted incumbent BMP Optimum, MindShare and MediaVest for its 9m media account.
The National Readership Survey release date for the period for June 1997 to May 1998 has been delayed until Monday (July 6). The surveys will exclude data collected for national newspapers in June 1997.

The National Magazine company has appointed Kathy Moulton as advertisement director on SHE. She was previously advertisement manager for EMAP’s New Woman.
Mills & Allen is testing the effectiveness of poster sites as a direct response medium, with a campaign for Black & Decker created by Black Cat Direct using its Central region test pack. The company has bought around 180 48-sheet and 96-sheet panels from regional contractor Grosvenor in the Meridian TV area and London.
The Irish Post, the newspaper for the Irish in Britain, has appointed Norah Casey as editor.
LWT is to celebrate 30 years of transmission at the end of July with specially commissioned programmes including Simply the Best and 30 Years of London Sport.
