Tesco adds printers to its PC line-up

Tesco is stocking colour printers for computers for the first time.

Lexmark International is supplying the supermarket with its 1000 Color Jetprinter. It retails at about 89.

The models come with a free Disney Interactive CD-Rom title – Disney’s Print Studio, The Little Mermaid – which features clip art from the Walt Disney movie and normally retails at 29.

Two of Tesco’s stores started stocking colour printers last week.

“Our strategy is to open the very low end of the market place,” says Tony Hall, UK director of the consumer products division of Lexmark. “We are very happy with existing retailers such as Dixons, but it is our strategy to keep in line with what consumers want.”

The move follows successful trials of cut-price PCs. Siemens Nixdorf started supplying computers to the Tesco Extra store in Pitsea in early July (MW July 9) and is now supplying five more stores.

Fujitsu has also encountered a strong demand for its products which have been stocked at Tesco’s New Malden store from mid-July. The original order by Tesco for 300 computers has been doubled with about 100 left to be sold.
