BARB, the Broadcasters’ Audience Research Board, is the latest media research organisation to launch its own Website ( The site, designed and hosted by MediaTel, is on open access and carries the BARB weekly viewing report and top programmes. The first wave of weekly data will be published on the site on August 18.

Computer manufacturer Acer has launched an online ordering facility on its UK Website ( aimed at consumers. Online sales are allocated to the nearest reseller by postcode through Acer’s Extranet, which serves the company’s resellers and distributors. According to site designer Bluewave, the allocation of sales “achieves e-commerce on Acer’s website without creating a direct sales channel, and therefore avoids competition with Acer’s resellers”.

The Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) has launched a Website to encourage Give As You Earn contributions to charities. The site (, launched by Web design practice TMG Hypermedia, contains a range of downloadable forms and calculators that encourages employees to make regular, monthly donations direct from their pay, tax free.

The UK Website for satellite children’s TV channel Cartoon Network will begin taking advertising from early 1999, according to Mick Buckley, senior vice-president of advertising sales. The site (www.cartoon-network, owned by Time Warner, claims 45,000 page hits a day.

AOL, the world’s biggest Internet service provider, has reported profits and membership growth ahead of most analysts expectations for the three months to June 30. The company posted quarterly profits of $57.3m (35.4m), based on revenues of $792.3m (489.1m). This compared to profits of $5.6m (3.5m) in the same quarter last year. AOL ended the period with 12.5m members worldwide, up 11 per cent over the quarter. Membership has grown by 3.9 million over the year.

Audi, the car manufacturer, and Associated New Media have signed up as the first UK customers of Aria, the Website activity tracking system marketed by Andromedia. The package is widely used in the US to provide real-time analysis of site use by a range of online publishers and advertisers.
