Esberger quits commercial role at Cellnet after a year

Cellnet commercial director and former marketing director Simon Esberger has resigned after only one year with the company.

Esberger was hired as Cellnet marketing director in September 1997 but was moved to the commercial director’s role in June this year. He was replaced by Canadian Kent Thexton.

The commercial director role was Esberger’s fourth job since leaving Häagen-Dazs in 1993 to become marketing director of Spillers Petfoods. He then took the same role at Mercury Communications but left when the company was merged into Cable & Wireless Communications.

Esberger’s role of building brand partnerships at the 60 per cent BT-owned mobile phone company has been taken over by head of business development Tom Alexander.

Alexander, who had reported to Esberger since June, continues to head a 30-strong business development team. He was responsible for brokering a tie-in deal with Barclaycard. It is unclear whether Esberger has another job to go to.
