BT to offer ‘personal’ ring tones

BT is to launch a new service for residential numbers, which enables different ringing tones to be emitted from one phone, according to who the call is for.

Customers will pay a fee for the Distinctive Ring service, which allows different members of the household to have their own personalised numbers for the same phone line.

For instance, a teenager can give friends her personalised number so she and other family members will be able to recognise the dial tone, and know the call is for her. Alternatively, the service could be utilised to indicate business calls to a home line.

An advertising campaign will support the service, but BT has refused to name a launch date.

BT’s internal reorganisation continues, with a new wave of senior appointments announced this week.

Former consumer division acting marketing director Peter Conway is to be head of business development in the UK strategy division. His predecessor, head of mobility services Mike Wagner, now has responsibility for ‘Individuals’ in the UK markets division.

Also in UK markets, former director of customer services and business development, Duncan Ingram, will take responsibility for marketing and shared channels.
