V&A name debate was not serious

Now that the silly season is over, may I clarify the position about the Victoria & Albert Museum’s name?

The editorial which I wrote for the V&A Magazine reflected in a light-hearted manner on our name, offered a bottle of champagne to anyone coming up with a good alternative, but concluded very firmly that, like the Louvre or the Met, we should stick with our present title.

Unfortunately a journalist misread my article and produced a sensationalist story, leading to Iain Murray’s column “Resist this vulgar attack on the V&A” (MW September 10). I am sorry that anyone was misled by this.
