Sega Europe has appointed a new UK marketing director, Giles Thomas, former UK head of marketing at MTV Networks Europe. Thomas has been appointed in advance of the 60m European launch of Sega’s new 128-bit console Dreamcast, scheduled for September 1999. He replaces Jo Bladen who left the company in March.

Stakis, the hotel, casino and health club chain, has appointed former hotel marketing director Mike Ashton, to the new position of group marketing director across its three core businesses.

Tesco is to launch a 43-strong range of own-brand cookery and children’s books on October 12.

The Australian Tourist Commission has appointed Jac Burrage to the new position of business development manager Olympics, Europe and South Africa, with a brief to build marketing partnerships with sponsors.

Regional brewer Greene King is to launch a new ale this week, but refused to comment.

Michael Chamberlain, co-founder of Marketing Week, has joined consultancy Arthur D Little as head of media. He was previously on the board of management consultancy Informed Sources International and later formed media consultancy Laurie-Chamberlain.

Sports agencies Sports Vision Incorporated and International Sports and Leisure are about to lodge a bid to take over the British Formula Three motorsport series from its current owners, governing body Formula Three Association.

KP Nuts is launching Nutsters, peanuts coated in crunchy coatings in three flavours – cheese and onion, salt ‘n’ vinegar and ready salted. Marketing controller Caroline Bonwitt says: ‘Nutsters bridge the gap between nuts and crisps.’

Kellogg is reducing the size of its 450g Rice Krispies and 500g Corn Flakes boxes following repeated complaints from consumers that the taller boxes, introduced in July, do not fit in their cupboards.

Orange head of new media Nigel Shardlow has joined strategy consulting firm The Fourth Room.

Oftel has opened up telephone directory services to allow more companies to offer phone books, electronic directories and directory enquiry services.

Gallaher is to launch an ultra-low tar version of its value brand Mayfair, called Mayfair Ultra Lights, on October 1. It will compete head on with Imperial’s Lambert & Butler Ultra, which comes out at the same time (MW September 3).
