Greenpeace and Iceland take lead in eco-friendly fridges

Greenpeace is putting its logo on a new range of fridges and freezers to be sold at Iceland Frozen Foods outlets – the first time the environmental group has been involved in product endorsement.

Iceland is using the launch of the eco-friendly Kyoto range as a call for the refrigeration industry to follow its lead and produce eco-friendly products at affordable prices.

The products run on naturally-occurring gas rather than CFCs which destroy the ozone layer, or HFCs, which cause climate change.

Iceland chairman and chief executive Malcolm Walker, a Greenpeace member for many years, says: “The Iceland Kyoto products sell at the same prices as conventional appliances and are significantly cheaper than other eco-friendly appliances, making care for the environment affordable for everyone.”

Walker is well-known for his “green” principles, having taken a vigorous stand against genetically-engineered food. The chain has so far resisted sourcing genetically modified products for its own-label range.

Two fridges and four freezers will go on sale at 415 of Iceland’s 770 stores. The range costs upwards of 139, which the retailer says is almost 100 cheaper than rival eco-friendly fridges. Another freezer and two fridge-freezers are to be added by the end of November.
