Amazon signs supplier deal with Virgin Net

Amazon.co.uk, the British subsidiary of leading US online bookseller Amazon.com, has signed a deal to become the “exclusive supplier of books” for Virgin Net.

Under the terms of the deal, Amazon.co.uk will receive “prominent placement through specific links and advertising throughout the site”.

Virgin Net claims 140,000 subscribers and a significant level of non-subscriber traffic to its home page.

The deal comes within a fortnight of Yahoo! UK and Ireland, Britain’s leading Web destination, switching over all advertising from Amazon.com to promote the Amazon.co.uk service.

David Clarke, chief executive officer at Virgin Net, says: “It [the deal] will offer a valued addition to our online shopping channel for the busy Christmas period and we fully expect a higher turnover of books than ever before.”

According to Simon Murdoch, managing director of Amazon.co.uk, the deal, “furthers Amazon.co.uk’s objective of providing customers with as many possible points of access”. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
