Blockbuster Entertainment hires ex-Barnardo’s director

Video rental company Blockbuster Entertainment has appointed former Barnardo’s head of marketing Claire Bowen as its first international marketing director.

Bowen, who will be based in the UK, will be responsible for planning and developing new markets in Africa and Eastern Europe.

She will also oversee marketing in Europe, the Far East, South America, China and Australia.

Vernon Salt, senior vice-president of international marketing, product and brand development, says: “Bowen is a talented and inspirational new member of our international marketing team, and her experience will be invaluable.”

Prior to joining Blockbuster, Bowen was a freelance consultant, advising clients such as Hasbro Europe and board game manufacturer USAoply on developing new markets and business planning.

While at Barnardo’s, Bowen launched the 130-year-old charity’s first TV advertising campaign. She was also co-founder of Accolade Europe, a subsidiary of the US entertainment software publisher, and has held marketing posts at CIC Video and EMI Records.

Blockbuster is backing the launch of Digital Video Disc (DVD), the new CD-sized video format seen as the natural successor to VHS.
