Three vie for COI crime prevention

The Government’s Central Office of Information (COI) is holding a pitch for a local crime prevention campaign which is due to break later this month.

Pitches for the 1m account took place last week between EURO RSCG Wnek Gosper, Grey, and another advertising agency. Grey is tipped to take the account.

The project is called the Crime Partnership Campaign and is run by the Home Office.

The idea behind the campaign is to promote joint meetings between the police, councils, and citizens’ groups, to discuss local crime problems and solutions.

The campaign will cover national press and radio and is expected to break later this month.

The initiative will promote some of the measures which come out of Home Secretary Jack Straw’s Crime & Disorder Act, which concentrates on community policing and was passed last year.

The 120m package of measures includes streamlining the youth justice system, recruiting 600 extra probation officers, introducing new offences of racially aggravated assault, extra restrictions on sex offenders, as well as orders requiring drug offenders who commit crime to seek treatment.

Straw says the aim of the Act is to “give power back to law-abiding people and undermining the gangs, drugs dealers, problem families and people whose sport is merely baiting their neighbours.”
