Broadsheets spark student fight

War has broken out between The Guardian and The Independent over a bunch of aspiring student writers.

The Guardian has just launched its 21st Student Media Awards. But for the first time in two decades, The Guardian gongs will go ahead without the collaboration of the National Union of Students.

The NUS and The Guardian have parted company following “issues surrounding the awards presentation in November”. The Guardian says it doesn’t need the NUS.

The NUS has flounced off to rival newspaper, The Independent, where another set of student media awards has been launched.

It will no doubt cross the minds of more enterprising students to enter the same piece of writing for both competitions. The embarrassing possibility of a double win for the same scholar awaits.
