Oftel names Axby as new mobile chief

Government telecommunications watchdog Oftel has appointed an ex-BT and Cellnet marketer to the new role of mobile phone chief.

Elaine Axby joins Oftel as policy project director for all mobile phone market issues, including the body’s review of mobile market competition, mobile call charges and the integration of fixed and mobile services.

She will also plan the licensing of “third generation” multimedia mobile phone services, set to launch early next year.

David Edmonds, director general of Oftel, says: “Mobile communications is one of the fastest growing areas in telecommunications today. Elaine Axby has a wealth of experience and knowledge of the mobile communications market that will be invaluable to Oftel.”

Axby joins Oftel in early April from telecoms consultancy Schema, where she is senior consultant for mobile business development.
