Sticky moments of steaming star

Ad agencies are crammed with failed musicians, but Lowe-Howard Spink harbours a fugitive from one of the most entertainingly named bands of yesteryear.

“Steaming Trousers” was the rock band. Pete Brown, senior planner at Lowe was the rock star. Brown decided to enter the advertising industry presumably to leave the rather, erm, sticky situation he was in.

He immediately created another “fragrant” mess at his first ad agency interview when asked, by the creative director, for his opinion on an ad campaign.

“I said I liked how deliberately cheesy it was in an ironic, appealing- to-students kind of way. He stared at me then told me it wasn’t meant to be cheesy, funny or ironic – it was serious.”

Funnily enough, Brown didn’t get the job.
