C-T marketing chief lands take-home role

Carlsberg-Tetley marketing director Doug Clydesdale has been promoted to managing director of take-home sales after only 14 months with the company.

Clydesdale will take up the new position in addition to his existing responsibilities after the current take-home managing director, Vincent Kelly, transfers overseas in early May. Kelly will become the general manager of Carlsberg in Hong Kong.

Clydesdale joined C-T in January last year from United Biscuits, where he was managing director of the KP Crisps division before moving to the central business development unit. Since his arrival, he has overseen a revamp of all its brands.

Clydesdale will supervise 127 staff in the take-home division, in addition to being responsible for brand marketing. He will report to chief executive Ebbe Dinesen.

The consolidation of the marketing and managing director posts follows a similar move at rival Whitbread. Whitbread sales director Stewart Gilliland added marketing to his responsibilities following the promotion of John Derkach to managing director of the Beefeater restaurant chain last year.

Clydesdale says: “This gives me the opportunity to widen my skills. We are still under-represented in take-home.”

He estimates that as much as nine per cent of Carlsberg-Tetley’s business is in the take-home market.
