Camelot rides the wheel of fortune in South Africa

Congratulations to Camelot, the National Lottery operator, for its part in securing the licence to run the South African lottery for the Uthingo consortium, in which it has a ten per cent stake.

Each member of the consortium will concentrate on its own specialisation. Tattersalls will handle promotion, while Gtech will run the software and hardware. But what of Camelot’s role?

Camelot, Diary readers will recall, shot to infamy in May 1997 after its annual results, leaked to Marketing Week, showed the company’s directors were raking in pay rises of up to 40 per cent.

The Lottery bosses have ever since been dubbed “fat cats”.

How appropriate, then, that in the South African Uthingo consortium Camelot will oversee security and finance.
