Capital Radio to create Y2K theme tune

Capital Radio is producing “the soundtrack to the millennium moment” – a 17-minute piece of music to accompany the BBC’s worldwide broadcast of London’s New Year’s Eve celebrations.

As the clock strikes midnight on December 31, the Thames will be given over to a firework display called “The river of fire”. The event will be broadcast simultaneously on the BBC and 95.8 Capital FM.

The accompanying music is being produced by Capital Radio in collaboration with legendary producer Trevor Horn of music company ZTT.

The millennium music, which does not yet have an official name, will consist of a medley from the last 200 years, ranging from the Beatles to Elgar.

The emphasis will be on popular music, although the Spice Girls will not feature, according to a Capital Radio spokesman.

The underscore to the piece will be produced by pop/classical crossover group the Art of Noise, famous for its hit “Moments in love”.

The millennium music will be released as a CD in February, packaged with the re-release of the Art of Noise album “The seduction of Claude De Bussy”.

Capital Radio is encouraging Londoners to listen to the broadcast while they watch the “River of fire” by giving away special edition mini radios as competition prizes.
