Sportal eyes £7m Euro 2000 sponsorship deal

Sportal, the international online sports company, is poised to sign up as a sponsor of the Uefa Euro 2000 football championships, in a deal believed to be worth almost &£7m.

The company has aggressive expansion plans and provides Web content for some of the top European football clubs, including AC Milan, Juventus and Bayern Munich.

It will also provide sports content for Cable & Wireless Communications’ digital TV platform.

Sportal, which aims to be the world’s leading provider of interactive sports content, completed a $50m (&£31m) equity financing deal just before Christmas, which valued it at over $170m (&£106m).

A spokesman for Sportal declined to comment on the sponsorship deal.

ISL Worldwide is negotiating the marketing rights on behalf of Uefa for the event, which is being held in Belgium and the Netherlands this summer. No one at the company was available for comment.

Sportal will join Hyundai, Philips, Carlsberg, Coca-Cola, MasterCard, JVC and McDonald’s as an official Euro 2000 sponsor.

This week it emerged that beer giant Carlsberg has signed as broadcast sponsor for ITV’s coverage of the football championships. The &£4m deal includes break-bumpers during all live games and highlights programmes.
