Taylor Nelson Sofres, the market research group, conducted a survey which shows the Christmas season attracted 1.4 million adult UK shoppers online. The most popular gifts purchased on the Web last December were books, CDs, computer games/software and toys, and the leading site for purchases was Amazon. Among “bricks and mortar” sites, Woolworths proved the most popular among UK online shoppers, followed by Boots and Argos. In total, four per cent of Southerners claimed they had used the Internet to purchase their gifts, compared with only two per cent of Northerners.
