P&G launches may hit trouble

It was interesting to see on page 7 (MW last week) that Procter & Gamble has been embarrassed by a new product launch, and on page 10, that it is launching another – Charmin – in the toilet tissue market.

One cannot help feeling that in challenging as strong a brand as Andrex, it could be embarrassed again. Judging by the shelf space in my local supermarkets, it would appear that P&G’s last two launches have been far from successful. These are Tempo, which competes with Kimberly Clark’s Kleenex for Men, and Bounty kitchen towel.

There is a belief that everything P&G does must be right. While it is clearly very successful, that is a myth and I think Charmin will struggle against Andrex.
