The Oxford English Dictionary is to follow the lead of the Encylopaedia Britannica and launch an online version for the first time. It will be funded by a subscription fee – adjusted according to usage and number of users – rather than by advertising. There are no plans for any sponsorship. The move is part of a £35m, 20-year revision project, funded by Oxford University Press and scheduled for completion by 2010.
