Yahoo! hunts UK head as European marketer quits

Yahoo!, one of the world’s most popular Internet search portals, has lost its European marketing chief.

Shelaine Green, who joined Yahoo! Europe as marketing director in July 1998, will leave the company at the end of March for personal reasons.

She does not have an immediate job to go to.

The loss leaves the company without a European marketing head. The development has occurred as UK and Ireland managing director Martina King, appointed in November, continues her search for a UK marketing chief (MW November 11 1999).

Green is responsible for marketing Yahoo!’s eight European-based search sites in the UK and Ireland, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

She joined the US-owned brand from mobile phone operator Orange, where she was segment marketing manager and responsible for setting up the mobile phone operator’s Talkshare tariff.

In her first week at Yahoo!, Green axed a pan-European advertising strategy executed through Publicis to concentrate on regional campaigns by local agencies. RPM3 was appointed in the UK to handle a &£400,000 TV and press campaign, using the “Do You Yahoo!” tagline, in March last year. Media is by Optimedia.

A spokeswoman says Yahoo! Europe operations director Jerry Glover, to whom Green reports, is recruiting from outside the company to fill the European post.
