Tesco picks chief for Net operation

Tesco has appointed head of local marketing David Clemence as chief marketer of its newly-launched Internet subsidiary, Tesco.com.

Tesco operates three main Internet arms – Tesco Online, the company’s corporate site; Tesco Direct, its home shopping service; and Tesco.Net, its Internet service provider – all of which will be brought under the Tesco.com domain name after the results announcement on Tuesday.

Tesco announced it is to invest &£35m in building its Internet business, as it revealed a 10.8 per cent increase in group pre-tax profits to &£455m on sales up 9.8 per cent to &£20.4bn. It is the first time a UK supermarket has broken the &£20bn sales barrier.

Clemence becomes marketing controller of the new company.

He replaces former e-commerce marketing controller Helen Bridgett, who left last month to become chief executive of new gardening website, Greenfingers.com.
