Associated appoints Evening Standard chief

Associated Newspapers has promoted Mike Orlov, the Mail on Sunday’s agency sales manager to ad director of the Evening Standard.

He replaces Sue Dear who moved into the same role at the Mail on Sunday last month (MW March 16).

Orlov will report in to Sally de la Bedoyere, who was also promoted last month from the position of ad director of the Mail on Sunday to managing director of the Evening Standard.

He starts his new role on Tuesday next week. Orlov would not be drawn on any changes or initiatives he wants to put in place.

Orlov says: “It’s a matter of getting to know what is going on before thinking about what to do in the role.”

The Mail on Sunday has also recruited Chris Smith, a planning director at BMP OMD, to take on the role of planning manager. Smith will start on May 8 and will be reporting to Sue Dear.

Dear says: “There has been a lot of strategy work that we have done and Chris’ role will be to take the best and build up a closer relationship with agencies and clients.”

In addition to this role Smith will also be responsible for commissioning bespoke research for the newspaper.
