Go for green and forget motives

So there is “immense ecology fatigue” in Middle England, your leader column states last week.

The power companies may indeed be far from altruistic in launching their green energy schemes in an attempt to position themselves as eco-friendly, but this does not alter the fact that we must all embrace sustainable energy sources or face cataclysmic consequences.

While it is true that consumers are no longer starry-eyed about paying a premium for “green” products that claim to save the planet, concern about the ravages to which planet earth is subjected are far from dead.

Nothing could be more “middle England” than the sight last week of Lord Melchett and 27 others being cleared by a court in their protest against genetically-modified crops – with support from Iceland chairman Malcolm Walker.

Green concerns can indeed still top the agenda among England’s middle classes.
