Iceland tests food packs on students

Iceland is launching a home shopping package for students, which offers two weeks’ worth of food delivered to the door.

The Student Survival Pack launches this week to coincide with the start of the new college term.

The pack – which costs £40 – contains breakfasts, snacks, drinks and 14 evening meals, together with non-food essentials such as toilet tissue. Recipe ideas and a personalised message are included and a vegetarian option is available.

The packs will be sold through a special hotline number for a three month national trial. If the trial is successful, they will be sold through the Internet as well. Packs will be delivered to students who live within a ten-mile radius of their local Iceland store.

An Iceland spokesman says parents and students are being targeted in the initiative: “The home-shopping package will allow worried parents to keep their student children supplied with food.”

Iceland was the first food retailer to launch a nationwide home-delivery service, three years ago. It began its Net home-shopping service last year in October.
