Capital FM drops logo in image revamp

95.8 Capital FM is to ditch its famous smiling sun logo in an overhaul of the station’s image.

The flagship Capital Radio station will launch a new corporate identity later this month. It will be backed by a TV brand advertising campaign created by Mustoe Merriman Herring Levy (MMHL).

A Capital Radio spokeswoman says: “The sun is going, it’s not subtle enough to reflect the brand today. We needed something more relevant.”

MMHL was appointed in August to work on the one-off branding project (MW August 10) after Capital Radio’s two-year relationship with Abbott Mead Vickers.BBDO ended the same month. Zenith Media handles Capital’s media account.

Capital Radio London head of marketing Vijay Solanki started the process of rebranding 95.8 Capital FM last year (MW December 16).

Solanki is to leave Capital Radio at the beginning of next year to join IPC Media as marketing director of its music and sport division.

The rebranding is understood to have had a knock-on effect for programming under 95.8 FM programme controller Jeff Smith and for Capital Radio Advertising under its managing director Linda Smith.

Smith returned to the radio group this year from her position as commercial director at MediaVest.
