Spielberg in Lego movie set deal

Lego is teaming up with Steven Spielberg to launch a movie-making set for budding film directors.

The Lego Studios Steven Spielberg MovieMaker Set will roll out in the US next month and is expected to reach the UK in April 2001.

The set, priced $180 in the US, includes a PC movie camera, editing software and Lego blocks, cars and other props, as well as a book on making real movies. Youngsters will build their “story” and capture the action on the PC movie camera before editing their footage and adding music and sound effects.

The product is an extension of Lego’s recent expansion into TV and film. It aims to meet a surge in interest in film-making among young people, sparked by the Net and films such as the Blair Witch Project. It is also the sponsor of this year’s BAFTA Children’s Awards.

Its software division, Lego Media, is moving into the educational sector with the launch of the Lego My World range of CD Roms.

Available from Friday, the first two titles, My World First Steps and My World School Skills (both £24.99), will guide three- to six-year-olds through activities based on areas such as literacy, numeracy and art.

The launch will be backed by ads created by Clinic Design.
