Camelot plans millionaire scratchcard

Camelot believes the National Lottery Commission will relax restrictions on million-pound scratchcard prizes and non-cash giveaways and permit two new Instants games.

The Cars and Cash scratchcard, to be launched next January, will offer 200 Astra SRI cars plus cash prizes. Millionaire, scheduled for April, will offer five £1m jackpots. Both await approval from the NLC, which has until November 24 to choose Camelot or the People’s Lottery as operator of the next licence.

The Lottery regulator has twice rejected plans to launch a millionaire game. However, Camelot marketing director Ian Milligan says the NLC has “indicated” that this time it is likely to permit the games.

Scratchcard sales average 11 million a week, which Camelot hopes to boost to 12 million by March. Overall sales are up four per cent year on year in the six months to September, and Camelot has raised its Good Causes target from £10bn to £10.5bn.

Milligan says changing the main Lottery game matrix – as the People’s Lottery plans to do if it wins the licence – has never been done before when sales are rising.
