Heinz picks European retail chief

Heinz has appointed Nigel Clare as chief executive of its European retail division, set up to streamline operations across the continent.

Heinz says the move marks a new stage in the strategic development of its global categories, through regional leadership and local focus.

The restructure follows Sainsbury’s decision to scrap category management (see “MW200102010085”).

Clare, previously managing director for grocery, Europe, has been named temporary area director for the UK and Ireland. He reports to Dave Williams, Heinz executive vice-president and president of Heinz Europe and Africa.

Heinz has created equivalent posts to cover all European markets and operations, giving area directors responsibility across all categories of the grocery giant’s business.

Mark Holdaway, previously European general manager for beans, pasta, meals and puddings, becomes business director of grocery UK, with responsibility for soups, beans and pasta, and UK ketchups and sauces. He continues to oversee corporate marketing.

Julian Dunn, previously European general manager for soup, is now business director of nutritional foods, incorporating UK infant feeding and Heinz Organic. Clodagh Ward, formerly general manager for cold condiments, will report to Dunn as general manager of UK infant feeding, while Rupert Maitland-Titterton will oversee Heinz Organic and Nutritional Foods.

Robin Walker, previously manager director for sauces, is business director of frozen and chilled brands.

The restructure also includes the appointment of John West’s managing director Ian Meadows as business director of seafood for the UK and western Europe.
