Deutsche Telekom-owned One 2 One has handed the bulk of its &£10m below-the-line business to Claydon Heeley Jones Mason.

WWAV Rapp Collins, which previously held the account, did not repitch for the business.

Claydon Heeley is understood to have pitched against Craik Jones Watson Mitchell Voelkel, Archibald Ingall Stretton, DP&A and three other, unnamed, agencies.

Claydon Heeley will be briefed to come up with a strategy to help retain prepay contract and business customers. In the past, mobile phone companies have concentrated on customer acquisition, but increased competition from rival networks is forcing them to put more money behind customer retention.

One 2 One has also appointed Manchester-based MKP Performance to handle part of its below-the-line work, with particular responsibility for delivering point-of-sale to more than 17,000 retail outlets. The agency was appointed by One 2 One’s head of consumer marketing Paul Hamburger.

One 2 One claims to have doubled its number of customers in 2000 to 8.3 million as of December 31, with pre-pay customers accounting for 6.4 million customers – 77 per cent of the total.

There has been speculation that One 2 One may be rebranded T-Mobile, the name of Deutsche Telekom’s service in Germany.
