Not what they meant by the Barmy Army

The Diary was extremely impressed with the show put on by the Royal Marines just before kick-off at the Worthington Cup Final, at Cardiff’s magnificent Millennium Stadium.

After abseiling down the structure they set off a spectacular fireworks display, welcoming finalists Liverpool and Birmingham City.

But we hear the Marines weren’t just there to show off. They were also hoping to recruit eager young men, aged 16 to 20, from the crowd.

An Army source says: “[They were looking for] someone who’s probably unemployed and woke up the next day with a hangover, wondering what to do with his life.”

The Diary sincerely hopes that a City fan seen dolled up in a curly wig and moustache, looking for a fight and chanting “You’ll never work again”, was one of them.
