Top boxer sets up sports agency

Audley Harrison, the British Olympic heavyweight boxing gold medallist, has set up a company, which will deal in sponsorship and television rights.

Harrison, 29, is keen to “run his own show” through A-Force – which is also his nickname – instead of using a promoter such as Don King or Frank Warren to handle his business affairs.

The sports science graduate has a four-year plan to win a world championship belt, building a brand image as an “educator and entertainer” along the way.

Earlier this year Harrison signed a £1m, two-year television and radio deal with the BBC.

Octagon has been signed up to deal with Harrison’s marketing and international television rights. Clifford Bloxham, group director, says: “We’ve worked with him for more than two years, dating back to before he became a big name.

“He’s a very intelligent guy and recognises the importance of building his own brand.

“It’s also true that a boxer may find it tough to be recognised as a brand when, in many cases, the promoter is bigger than the boxer.”

Harrison’s first professional fight is on May 19 against an opponent who will be announced this week.

The A-Force logo, which will be officially launched 3 May, will appear on the ring, canvas and Harrison’s boxing shorts during his bouts.
