Datamonitor claims that the number of online gamers in Europe and the US will grow from about 13 million in 2001 to more than 111 million in 2005. The emergence of console online gaming, greater broadband access and a greater variety of games will be the key drivers of growth. But the failure to generate revenues from online advertising means that almost 90 per cent of revenues by 2005 will come from pay-to-play.
