BT Retail appoints new ventures director

BT Retail’s consumer division has appointed a director of new ventures to oversee the development of products, services and partnerships that extend the BT brand.

The new position has been filled by Martin Johnson, who will be responsible for creating alternative revenue streams.

Johnson, an Australian national, joins BT after ten years as marketing director at Orange Australia.

Johnson will report to consumer division managing director Angus Porter, who says: “Our aim is to cement and extend BT’s position as the first choice for all communications in UK homes. We are delighted to have recruited someone of Michael’s calibre to this role. His strong background in brand marketing and product development in the telecoms industry makes him ideally placed to help us achieve this goal.”

Johnson’s appointment follows the introduction of new residential products including the free answering service BT Answer 1571; entertainment telephony and TV package deals with ITV Digital and Sky; and the Choices from BT Together pricing packages.

Porter has said that BT is seeking partners to help launch a range of products aimed at gaming and mobile phone markets (MW June 22, 2000) in a bid to become a “retailer of communication services” aimed at consumers.
