Ocean Spray trials white berry juice

Ocean Spray, the cranberry juice maker, is launching its first line of white cranberry juice drinks to date.

They are harvested several weeks earlier than red cranberries to give a smoother, milder taste.

There will be three flavours: white cranberry, white cranberry and peach and white cranberry and strawberry. The new line is being trialled regionally in the US and will launch nationally in January 2002. It is understood that an international roll-out, which would include the UK, is likely to take place later next year.

Sarah Johnson, general manager for Ocean Spray in the UK and Ireland, says: “This new product has taken about two years to develop.

“The white cranberry is not fully ripened, so it gives it a much milder and smoother taste, which we think families will enjoy.”

Ocean Spray was founded in 1912 and controls about 50 per cent of the US cranberry drinks market. It became a marketing co-operative in 1930 and is now owned by more than 900 cranberry and citrus growers in the US and Canada. It also makes sauces and snacks and had sales of $1.4bn (&£968m) last year.
