Ex-5 Live man takes on new media at BBC

The BBC has promoted Radio Five Live marketing manager Steve Conway to the position of new media marketing and communications chief.

This is the first appointment within a BBC marketing department that unites the marketing, publicity and research functions in one role.

Conway will be responsible for BBC.co.uk, the BBC’s interactive television initiatives, and its long-term creative think-tank called Imagineering.

He will report to the BBC’s director of marketing, Andy Duncan, and to the director of new media and technology, Ashley Highfield.

Conway says: “The division has a well established website in BBC.co.uk, while the BBC’s ground-breaking interactive TV services over the summer have certainly put the BBC firmly on the interactive map.”

In August, the BBC claimed that 4.5 million sports fans experienced interactive coverage of the Wimbledon tennis championships and the British Open golf tournament on the Sky Digital platform.

During his time at Five Live, Conway was responsible for the overall creation and implementation of the corporation’s analogue, online and digital marketing strategies, and the execution of new advertising campaigns – onand off-air – and the rebranding of the station’s identity.

Conway joined the BBC in January 2000, having previously worked for United Biscuits, Kraft Foods and Groupe Danone.
