McDonald’s set to roll out Wotsits snack

Golden Wonder and McDonald’s have agreed a joint venture that will see the snack company’s Wotsits Mealtime Potato Shapes being sold over the counter at McDonald’s restaurants.

Initially the venture is being tested in about 60 restaurants in the South-west. The trials finish at the end of the month and, if successful, the scheme will be launched nationwide.

Wotsits Mealtime Potato Shapes, which are cheese-flavoured mashed potato with a light crispy crumb coating, were launched in supermarkets last November targeting children.

At McDonald’s, the product can be bought separately or as part of a McDonald’s Extra Value Meal. The promotion is backed by in-store branding and point-of-sale material.

A spokesman for Golden Wonder says: “By linking this product with McDonald’s we hope to get more street cred for the brand.”

Other Wotsits brand spin-offs include Weenie Wotsits, launched in November 1999, and Wotsits Wafflers.

Last October Golden Wonder launched its biggest sales promotion for Wotsits in a link with Granada Media, backed by SwapitShop.com, a website aimed at children.
