Asda tests in-store ‘green’ detergent vending system

Asda is testing a detergent vending machine and is considering introducing it to all of its 247 UK stores if consumer reaction is positive.

The environmentally friendly OnTap machine allows customers to dispense Asda’s range of Logic liquid detergents (biological, non-biological and colour) as well as EasyIron Zest fabric conditioner into refillable pouches.

The trial, which starts this week, will run for 12-weeks at the company’s High Wycombe store. If the dispenser is launched nationally, Asda says that it is likely to invite big brands such as Surf and Ariel, to use the system for their products.

The supermarket estimates that OnTap will save customers at least £1 every time they refill their pouch with detergent, rather than buying a new packet off the shelf.

Asda laundry buyer Ayaz Alam says: “OnTap is a win-win service where shoppers enjoy big savings and there are also significant environmental benefits. For most family households the saving is equivalent to six-months’ free detergent a year.”

In-store demonstrators will be on hand for the first couple of weeks to show shoppers how to use the dispenser system, which will be located in the laundry aisle.

Research conducted by Asda in the run-up to the test estimates that UK residents throw about 30 million empty detergent bottles away every year.
