Pitch Media to broker deals for UK athlete
Sports marketing agency Pitch Media has been appointed to broker sponsorship deals for Olympic-medal hope Alex Coomber.
Coomber is considered to be the UK’s best hope for a gold medal at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. She will compete in the skeleton – a form of bobsleigh that involves travelling at 80mph headfirst down a track of ice. Coomber, has been world champion for the past three years and British champion since 1997. The skeleton has only just been reinstated as an Olympic sport after it was banned 50 years ago for being too dangerous.
Pitch Media managing director Henry Chappell says sponsors will be offered the chance to have their brand displayed on the front of Coomber’s helmet, her clothing and the sled itself.
He also anticipates interest from companies wanting to use her to endorse brands.
Any deals will have to wait until after the Olympic Games as competing athletes are not allowed to wear company logos.
The Winter Olympics starts on Friday (February 8) in Salt Lake City. The 19th event is expected to be the biggest yet; more than 2,300 athletes from 80 countries are set to take part and compete in 78 medal events.
