Barclays gets private wealth top marketer

Barclays has promoted marketing and business development manager for international banking Gordon Rankin to marketing director of its wealth management division, Barclays Private Clients.

Rankin has worked for Barclays since 1990, in different roles including director of personal banking. He is a former board director of Harrison Cowley Advertising and has been head of marketing for HP Bulmer.

Rankin replaces Debbie Gorski, who left the company earlier this month to spend time with her family (MW March 7).

Rankin will report to Barclays Private Clients managing director Bob Hunter, as well as to group marketing director Simon Gulliford.

Rankin will be responsible for developing the wealth management brand at a time when rivals such as Lloyds TSB are struggling to make a success of their own wealth management operations.

He will be responsible for a plan to increase the division’s client numbers to 1.4 million by 2005, and doubling the value of assets under management. The division has 1 million clients in over 190 countries, with £88bn of funds under management.

The role of marketing director for Barclays Private Clients was created at the beginning of the year by Gulliford, who has restructured the entire marketing department.

Barclays uses Bartle Bogle Hegarty, BMP DDB and Publicis for its £20m advertising account. Starcom Motive holds the £15m media account.
