Times must be hard for corpulent comedian Johnny Vegas, in the light of ITV Digital’s move into administration. But how desperate can one get? The Diary found out when booking tickets for a St Helens rugby league match.

Who should answer the phone but Mr Vegas himself? “Hello, this is Johnny Vegas. You have reached St Helens Rugby Club” Why did he have to introduce himself?

Of course, the reason Vegas took the St Helens job must be because he needs the cash, although the fact that he comes from the area and often sings its praises might also have something to do with it.

Never mind, the Diary is sure his ITV Digital antics will keep him in work – and pints of Guinness – for many years to come.
